The Kurdish community in London will come together in Finsbury Park on 23rd March to celebrate Newroz, marking the arrival of spring and the new year.
The spring equinox is a significant celebration for Kurds and many other cultures in the Middle East, including Afghans, Persians and Armenians.
The event will bring together people from various backgrounds to celebrate with music, dancing, and traditional food.
“For Kurdish people, it’s like a new year,” said Sawsan Salim, Director of Kurdish and Middle Eastern Women’s Organisation (KMEWO). “It’s a public event where everyone participates. It’s not about religion or nationalism—it’s just a celebration. We dress up, enjoy delicious food, and dance together.”
The Newroz festivities will include vibrant displays of traditional Kurdish dress, known as Cilî Kurdi, with families and friends gathering in a spirit of unity.
“We always celebrated growing up,” Salim recalled. “Even during difficult times with the Iraqi government, we would still dress in Kurdish clothes and go out to celebrate. It’s a symbol of freedom and the end of winter’s coldness.”
“Let me tell you, Kurdish people love dance and music,” Salim said.
Jeremy Corbyn, Independent MP for Islington North, who has been a regular guest at Newroz celebrations—will once again attend this year.
“It’s not just the Kurdish people celebrating,” Salim added. “We celebrate with Afghan, Arab, Turkish, and Iranian communities as well. It’s wonderful to see everyone coming together.”
This year, the event will start at 6 pm on Sunday.
