Windscreen repair companyAutoglass was forced to distance itself from a “distasteful” banner displayed on an Islington bridge known for its high number of suicides.

The banner, which read: “For whatever life throws at you,” included the Autoglass logo and was hung from the middle of Archway Bridge – dubbed “Suicide Bridge” by locals.

Ammanuel Afowerki saw the banner on Tuesday morning. He said: “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It looks professional and must have been done in the middle of the night.

“Why would somebody waste time and money doing that, and maybe even risk their life in doing so?”

An Autoglass spokesman said: “Autoglass is not currently running any form of advertising in, or near, the Archway Bridge.

“We’re aware that distasteful and unauthorised signage was placed on the bridge. This was not installed by the business and we are taking immediate steps to have it removed as soon as possible.”

Archway Bridge has been called “Suicide Bridge” by locals for more than 100 years. In 2010,  there were three deaths within three weeks, and in June 2013, a petition demanding greater anti-suicide measures was signed by up to 800 people.

Josh Bednash, a 21-year-old student who lives in nearby Crouch End, said: “Everybody who grows up in North London knows about Archway Bridge and its connection with suicides in the area.”
