Islington’s streets are the cleanest they have been in a decade thanks to an overhaul of its street-cleaning service, a feat recognised with a national ‘Outstanding Service Delivery’ award from Keep Britain Tidy.
The new system was introduced last year, with 86 street-sweepers being assigned a number of streets that they deep-clean at least five times a week.
Schedules were adjusted so that sweepers visit their streets after bin collection, so any waste is cleared promptly, and have mobile devices so they can easily report issues like fly-tipping.
With fewer vehicles being used, the council claims the changes have cut the street-cleaning service’s CO2 emissions by over 60 per cent.
And a Keep Britain Tidy survey shows Islington’s streets are at their cleanest for at least ten years.
Cllr Claudia Webbe, Islington Council’s executive member for environment and transport, said:
“Our system of dedicated neighbourhood street sweepers is making a real difference. This award is a fantastic achievement.”
