People interested in social justice can whet their appetite with a new series of events at Angel’s Cubitt gallery, which hosted its first day of a series of events last Saturday.
A Public Resource is promising to provide a stage to London’s political and social grassroots movements. The programme will consist of twice weekly events on Thursdays and Saturdays.
“I want to open up London and allow it to be used by individuals campaigning,” said curator Morgan Quaintance as he kicked off the season of talks and screenings.
“The programme is just about putting something out there to hopefully keep the buzz and the energy going around this stuff.”
The issues addressed on Saturday ranged from London’s social housing crisis to the clubbing scene for black LGBT people.
The day’s first presentation was delivered by Architects 4 Social Housing: two architects that provide alternatives to the government’s housing policy.
he event also hosted people directly affected by the housing crisis. A group of residents on a Lambeth estate, who have formed a campaign group called Save Cressingham Gardens, spoke out against the planned demolition of their homes.
Mr Quaintance said: “I’m just hoping for people to come down and find out about struggles and initiatives that they might be able to lend a hand to. Or to become more informed about what’s actually happening at the moment.”
The programme continues on this evening with a screening of a film about homeless people hopping freight trains in America. This will be followed by an open session with Q-Art, an art education organisation, on Saturday.
A Public Resource will run every Thursday and Saturday at the Cubitt Gallery. Entry is free.
