Islington Fixers Repair Party returns for their third event on Saturday 16 March at the Angel Central Shopping Centre in Islington.
The repair party, set up by the Islington Climate Centre alongside the Restart Project and Islington Council, is intended to get people in the community to think about their waste and how they can make the most of what they have. It is scheduled to take place between 11am and 3pm.
Bel Jacobs, co-founder of Islington Climate Centre, a local climate education group, described previous parties as “fun environments” where “people can get stuff fixed for free.”
“We’ve had queues the past couple of times,” she said. “And we’re expecting something similar on Saturday. People are really grateful for what we’re doing, and they say they hate it when they have to throw things away.”
Ms Jacobs said in the UK it is commonplace to throw away perfectly useable electrical items and replace them with new ones, a process she is eager to change.
She said: “Repairing our electrical items is completely natural and happens in other parts of the world, but what we do here by constantly buying new electrical items is not sustainable and ridiculously expensive. These parties are here to respond to that.”
Plans are currently being discussed to extend the parties beyond Angel and take them into community centres such as Caxton House near Archway.
Ms Jacobs would like to encourage people who are competent at fixing electrical items to volunteer for a role as a fixer. If you are interested, sign up at restarters.net.
