Following a public consultation on proposed improvements, Ambler and Canonbury Primary Schools will be made part of the School Streets programme, Islington Council has announced.
The Council’s latest announcement, made on 7 March, states that the proposed improvements will include widening the footpaths outside both schools, introducing double yellow lines, and adding planters and more trees to the road.
A range of measures will be put in place aiming to reduce traffic and improve safety for students who walk or cycle to the two schools.
This follows a public consultation on the proposed improvements which revealed that 74% of those who responded were worried about road safety outside the school and that 80% were concerned about pollution.
Despite these suggestions the Council’s consultation also showed that over 30% of respondents do not agree that the measures will make the area more pleasant and over 40% do not agree that these will make it safer to walk or cycle.
Parents at Canonbury Primary have previously raised concerns about the traffic outside the school. The school is located on Canonbury Road, which has recently become a boundary road for Canonbury Low Traffic Neighbourhood.
Marnie Pearce, one of several parents concerned about the traffic, told Islington Now that the traffic outside the school had been “just unsustainable” following the introduction of the LTN in Canonbury Ward.
In the latest announcement Councillor Rowena Champion, Islington Council’s Executive Member for Environment and Transport, said: “We’re determined to make Islington a cleaner, greener, healthier place to live for everyone, where all can travel safely and easily and where the toxic effects of air pollution are reduced.”
She added “Our?popular School?Streets?programme is key to achieving” these goals.
