An Islington-based community group has called for the area’s elderly to be provided with more opportunities to enjoy themselves.

The Kindness Offensive, a collective based in Holloway dedicated to random acts of kindness on a large scale, took a group of older people on a day trip to Eltham Palace last week.

But James Whitaker, the Volunteer Manager of Events, was struck by how rare a treat it was for them.

He said: “These guys don’t have many options for what to do.”

“More specifically, they usually use something called the Community Bus, which you have to book well in advance.”

“I think it’s a real shame.”

“One of the things we were told by the end of the day, due to the lack of funding, is that they very rarely get to do something when they want.”

“They had the whole day, we said they could take their time.”

“It’d be great if this could happen more often.”

The group travelled on The Kindness Offensive’s refurbished Routemaster bus, and everyone was delighted at the facilities on offer.

James added: “They all loved it and loved the bus – they weren’t quite expecting it.”

“The Routemaster era was the 60s, which is a time a lot of these people are familiar with.”
