Islington’s furriest residents were the stars of Top Dog and Scruffs Show at Mitchison Baxter Park on Sunday.
The council-sponsored canine event was a resounding success, according to Paul Alison, Operations and Dog Section Manager for Parkguard, the organisation responsible for security in Islington’s parks.
“The overall message [of the event] is promoting responsible dog ownership,” Mr Alison said. He cited the problem of dogs who were “visually” out of control, saying that sometimes it was just a matter of owners being unable to control their dogs, not aggressive animals.
Nearly 60 residents and their dogs attended at least part of the five-hour event, which combined one-to-one training, canine-ownership education, free microchipping, and accessories for humans who attended with a dog in tow.
Fouling was another problem discussed with attendees.
The Scruffs Show awarded prizes to dogs who participated in the agility course, along with awards for best trick, waggiest tail, best behaviour, dog the judge would most like to take home, and the judges’ special prize.
“We had a good turnout and it’s been quite successful,” Alison said.
