A charity has launched an initiative to tackle the rising loneliness crisis, by selling bespoke Christmas crackers.
Isobel Miller, fundraising and communications manager at Islington Giving, said: “Angel crackers is an initiative where Islington Giving, and local businesses, come together to raise money to tackle loneliness and isolation.”
For a suggested donation of £5 per cracker, supporters can help fund community spaces for isolated residents, inclusive food co-ops, and practical support for those experiencing homelessness.
Each Angel cracker contains a fun fact about Islington, a conversation starter, a festive teabag, a fun novelty item, and of course, the traditional Christmas paper hat.
‘Golden Tickets’ are also hidden inside some crackers, giving supporters the chance to win prizes donated by local businesses. Prizes range from Fitbits to £150 restaurant vouchers.

Miller said: “A lot of people think Islington is this really prosperous, wealthy place… but it’s hugely divided. 43% of children here live in poverty, and there’s really high poverty rates amongst older people as well.”
Loneliness is an ongoing issue in the local area; the borough has some of the highest levels of mental ill health in England, and the highest level of depression in London.
For people like Marium, a member of Manor Gardens charity, community support initiatives can make a real difference in tackling these challenges.
Marium said: “They understand without me having to explain. People listen. They don’t judge. It feels like family.”
So far, more than 1600 crackers have been handcrafted by local volunteers. Islington Giving has set a target to raise £10,000.
The crackers are a collaboration between Islington Giving, Angel Islington BID, and the Business Design Centre, supported by Mulalley, and sponsored by Bolt Burdon Solicitors.
