THE Craft Beer Co. in Barnsbury has announced a home-brewing competition with a £5,000 prize to boost the industry’s profile. The winner, selected by a panel of industry experts, will also have ten barrels of their product produced by award-winning Dark Star Brewery, and the opportunity for it to become a permanent commercial product.
Stephen Balderson, 22, marketing and communications director of Craft Beer Co. said: “The origin of the idea was that people were bringing in their own stuff for our staff to try. “The beer industry is in a really good place, especially for craft beers, and I don’t think anybody in the UK celebrates home-brewing the way we’re trying to. There’s a huge range of entrants. We’ve got a couple in who are scientists, and we had a guy in who’s never brewed.”

Matt Andrews, 27, is a web-developer and new to the home brewing scene: “I do extract brewing. Extract is sort of like painting by numbers; grain brewing is like being a proper artist.”
Entries must be submitted by 14 January. The awards evening takes place at the Craft Beer Co. Islington on 3 February. There is more information about how to enter on their website.
