Bike thefts in Islington, a previous hot spot, have declined considerably during the past year.
According to the latest data made available by the Metropolitan Police, there was a significant decline of 25.5 per cent in incidents of bike thefts during 2023 compared to 2022.
The recent crime statistics reveal that 726 bike theft incidents were reported in 2023, compared to 975 occurrences in the previous year.
In 2022, the number of bike thefts began at the relatively low figure of 56 in January and gradually increased, reaching its peak in April with 107 incidents. After April, there was a gradual decline in thefts until December, when it sharply dropped to 36 cases.
Notably, the summer months, particularly June and July, saw higher-than-average theft rates.
By contrast, the trend of bike thefts in 2023 followed a different trajectory.
The year began with a lower number of thefts compared to 2022, with 44 incidents in January. There was then a fluctuating pattern throughout the year, with occasional spikes and dips. March saw a peak of 72 thefts, followed by a significant drop in April to 51 incidents. As in 2022, the summer months experienced slightly higher rates of theft, with June recording 64 incidents.
Both years exhibited similar seasonal trends, with theft rates typically increasing during the warmer months.
So far in 2024, 46 bike thefts were reported in January, a slight rise on last year.
Ward-wise analysis of Bicycle theft offences in Islington
The bike theft data for Islington Borough's wards between January 2022 and December 2023 reveals varying levels of incidents across different areas.
Bunhill ward reported the highest number of thefts at 229, followed by St. Mary's and St. James with 130 incidents. Clerkenwell and Finsbury Park also experienced significant number of thefts, recording 137 and 138 incidents respectively.
In contrast, wards like Hillrise and Holloway reported lower numbers, with 46 and 44 thefts, respectively.
