Immersive and sculptural artwork will be dotted around iconic local locations, as part of a new installation series for Clerkenwell Design Week.
The artwork, located in Clerkenwell Green and Charterhouse Square, will champion Clerkenwell’s rich history, with one architect designing a large sculptural landmark inspired by Clerkenwell’s historical tradition of clockmaking.
Pedestrians strolling through Charterhouse Square can expect to see an immersive, sound-led installation. Marlon Cera-Marle, Director, explained that visitors can listen to recordings of local residents and soundscapes and then respond to what they hear by drawing on ceramic tiles. The “Recreatura” project will gradually take shape, transforming shared sounds and memories into an evolving architectural artwork.
The concept, ‘Design Interventions’, aims to encourage new designers to get recognised and make art more accessible.
Cera-Marle said: “Putting these Design Interventions in public spaces means that emerging talents get immediate feedback, which is key to their future success.”
“Our theme this year is ‘Where Design Belongs’ which touches on the importance of design being for everyone and being available where they actually are.”
Clerkenwell Design Week is an annual event which showcases the unique ecosystem of designers, architects, brands and makers that make Clerkenwell such a creative hub. It began as a local initiative but has now grown into one of the world’s leading design festivals.
This year aims to ground the internationally recognised festival back to its local origins. They have teamed up with community organisations, schools and are supporting grassroots campaigns to celebrate Clerkenwell’s rich history of design.
Cera-Marle said: “[The design week] can serve as a powerful platform for community building, and we are extremely proud to be partnering with The Peel charity.”
They have also partnered with local schools and the council to help fund a park ranger who will look after all the green spaces in the area.
Clerkenwell Design Week will take place on the 19th-21st May.
