ARSÈNE Wenger believes that one day he will be “very proud” of his achievements at Arsenal, as he prepares for his 1,000th game in charge of the Gunners.
The Gunners’ Saturday lunchtime trip to Chelsea, which will be shown live on BT Sport, represents the latest in a string of milestones the Frenchman has attained during his 18 years in North London.
The accolade adds extra spice to the clash at Stamford Bridge, with the London rivals separated by only four points as the title race hots up, during a season that has intensified the boss’ long-running spat with Blues gaffer Jose Mourinho.
Last week the Frenchman admitted he never imagined staying at the club for so long: “No, not at all, I never would envisage that. We are in a job like you go for the next game, and try to do well in that next game. Then step by step, sometimes you get to 1,000.”
Speaking before Sunday’s 1-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur, he told the Sunday Times: “That (Chelsea) game will be important not because it’s my 1,000th but because of what’s at stake for our season.
“It was a trophyless period but certainly a much more difficult and sensitive period, and we needed much more commitment and strength than in the first part of my stay here. I went for a challenge that I knew would be difficult because we had to fight with clubs who lose £150m per year when we had to make £30m per year.
“I accepted to stay here for a long time knowing that we had little chance to win the Premiership, but I think now we are in position again where we can fight with other clubs to sign big players.”
