Africans Unite Against Child Abuse (AFRUCA), a charity based in Canonbury, is holding its third annual summit on Saturday. The theme of the summit is “Safeguarding: Everyone’s Responsibility” and will be explored through a series of workshops on youth crime and female genital mutilation.
Saater Ikpaahindi, AFRUCA’s project officer, told Islington Now: “There has been a significant rise in knife crime in London in the past year. This is a major concern and something we are trying to raise awareness about.” She said the increase in youth crime is the consequence of peer pressure and parents’ not having enough time, “These young people seek a sense of security within their community and end up getting involved in a local gang.”
Kevin Hyland OBE, the UK’s Anti-Slavery Commissioner, is the keynote speaker at the summit.
