This mangled trainer is all that came between Debora Aru and a severed toe, after she caught her foot in the escalator at Angel Underground station.

Ms Aru told Islington Now: “I didn’t realise how dangerous they could be until todayI could have lost my toes. Luckily I was wearing trainers a size too big, and this probably saved my foot from amputation.”

The end of the Italian student’s trainer was torn off after becoming trapped between two of the escalator’s steps. The accident occurred during the morning rush-hour on Monday 7 March.

In a statement, Transport for London said: “The number of accidents on escalators in comparison to the number of Tube journeys is extremely low, but we are not complacent and are working hard to reduce this further. We have frequent PA announcements reminding customers to be careful when using escalators.

“We also run safety campaigns throughout the year using posters in lifts, trains and stations, as well as advertisements on escalators and gate lines, all across our network to encourage customers to take care whilst using the escalators.”
