Halloween is being brought into the homes of isolated children by a Newington Green storyteller who wants to “reach as many families as we can in these difficult times.”

Emily Hanna-Grazebrook is a professional storyteller who created Tales from the Dragonfly in 2015, weaving tales and music together in her live performances in the tradition of folklore.

In the classroom: Emily had to work out how to bring her storytelling online.

Her “Spooktacular Storytelling” live event will be held on Zoom on Wednesday 28 October as part of a series of Halloween events next week from storytelling group Tales from the Dragonfly.

Martha Aldridge, who will be attending the event with her daughter, said: “It’s fun and it’s an opportunity for them [the children] to get together… It’s something for them to look forward to.”

Lockdown has brought fresh challenges for the creative community, but Emily has tackled this by bringing fun and creativity online. With the help of her son and husband, she decided to share her tales via a free podcast which has been downloaded almost four thousand times.

“It’s a family project to support other families. It was important to us to be able to spread joy and love and storytelling in these difficult times,” she said.

Now she wants to brighten up Halloween for children who can’t go trick or treating. Children will be encouraged to dress up and bring props to take part in the action.

Laetia Hawksby, whose child attends Newington Green Primary school, said, “I can’t think of anyone better than Emily to do it.”

The “Spooktacular Storytelling” live event is ticketed on Eventbrite, but Emily is encouraging anyone who may struggle to pay to contact her.

An audio horror story for adults will also be available from Tuesday 27 October and a special Halloween edition of the Dragonfly Tales podcast will be released on Thursday 29 October.
