A 12-year-old Highbury gymnast has completed a unique gymnastic challenge.
Aasha Kimpton, who lives off Liverpool Road, Highbury, set herself the task of completing 2,012 somersaults during the first two months of 2012 to raise money for the Joanna Brown Trust, which encourages involvement in sport.
The trust has also been active in supporting Aasha for the last three years.
On February 29 she had completed 2024 somersaults, and has so far raised £75 for the charity.
She said: “I’m happy and relieved that I’m done because now I don’t have to keep count any more!”
Aasha, who was shortlisted for the TV talent show ‘Got to Dance’, executed 50 somersaults a day on the floor, the bars and the vault, as well as while balancing precariously on a 10cm wide bar.
Throughout the two months, however, there were times when she thought she would be unable to complete her challenge.
In January she had to leave her gym and spent a week without training, unable to undertake any somersaults at all.
She then lost another day because of unexpected snowfall. Those missed sessions cost her around 350 somersaults.
By February 26, she had completed 1,873 somersaults and only had two more sessions to get to 2,012.
Nicole Kimpton, Aasha’s mother, said: “I thought we were going to have to go down to the local sports centre and catch up on the trampoline.”
With a helping hand from the extra leap year day, Aasha managed to complete her challenge with an additional 12 somersaults for good measure.
Aasha started gymnastics at the age of four and now trains for four hours a day, five days a week at Heathrow Gymnastic Club in Hounslow.
She was ranked third in England last year, and will be competing in the British Championships in June. She hopes to represent Great Britain at the next Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2016.
Richard Brown, who founded the Joanna Brown Trust in memory of his sister who lived in Islington, said: “Aasha is our leading light. She was the first athlete we supported.
“It’s a fantastic achievement. She must have been very dizzy at the end of it. We’re really proud of her.”
