Just ten people have a permit to charge electric vehicles at meters in Islington despite nearly £100,000 being spent on the installation of power sources across the borough.

Motorists could have travelled 635 miles in electric cars using the power obtained from three of the seven meters on Islington’s roads in a year.

In 2009, Islington Council predicted that demand for its charging points would exceed supply.

Transport for London has given the council £97,750 to install the points and the freedom to decide how the funds are spent.

The council decided that residents who park their cars on the road must pay £17 for an annual permit to use the charging points, whereas those who use private parking may apply for a free permit.

When TfL committed £50,000 for the charging points in 2006, Ken Livingstone, then Mayor of London, said: “People in Islington are benefiting from Transport for London funding, which is providing real, local travel improvements.”

The data covers period of 12 months from November 2011 and was uncovered through a Freedom of Information request.

Islington Council was unavailable for comment.

Boris Johnson has launched a separate scheme called Source London to expand the use of electric cars in London. This year there will be at least 1,300 charging points around London under the project.

  1. You realise that in order for more people to be able to use electric cars, the infrastructure must first be in place? this £100,000 invested isnt just for the 10 people who currently have a permit, it is to make the logistics of owning an electric car easier, encouraging more people to make the switch from traditional fossil fuelled cars.

  2. What an ignorant way of looking at it.
The main thing stopping people from switching over to electric vehicles is a lack of charging points.
We need at least 1 of these in every street just to start with.

  3. Looking forward to using these points – although there aren’t enough of them. Just about to buy plug in hybrid. thanks Islington!

  5. Please don’t forget when last year and the year before islington council wanted to take me to court because I placed an external electric cable waterproof with emergency switch anti shock outside my property to recharge with my own electricity , being Tufnell Park charging point too far and not enough for the 5/6 vehicles in the the area.
Partners for improvement in islington ignorantly repkied bavkbto me in writing that I should have checked the charging points before bringing my Estrima Birò, a 4 whelp 2 seats electric mopedthat looks like a mini smart car over from
Italy. Guess what? On 18yh July 2016 @2:30am in crayford rd where I live, my pinky electric vehicle was set on to fire! Fire reached my propert where my 8 years old and I were sleeping. If it wasn’t for the dog who woke us up, we had died in the fire . Police closed the case as arson but did not find who did it. Now they want me to move because in danger…. but wherever they propose there are no charging points. What do you want me to do, stay there and have my new black extrinsic Birò burned again????

  6. With havin so much written content do you ever run into any
problems of plagorism or copyright infringement?

My site has a lot of completely unique content
I’ve either authored myself or outsourced but it appears a lot of it is popping it up all over
the internet without my permission. Do you know any techniques to help stop content from being stolen? I’d definitely appreciate it.

  7. You actually make it appear so easy with your presentation but I to find this topic to be really something that I feel I would never understand.
It kind of feels too complicated and very huge for me. I am looking forward
for your subsequent publish, I’ll try to get the dangle of it!
