Tufnell Park station reopens after nine-month closure

Tufnell Park tube station has reopened after closing for renovation nine months ago.

The tube station was shut on 8 June 2015 so that TfL could renovate two “obsolete” lifts, a decision that angered many local businesses.

Some small businesses had to take out loans in order to stay open. Many residents and local workers had to change their daily commute.

Laurier Nicas Alder, 30,  lives in Dartmouth Park and works in Soho. She has welcomed the reopening of the station.

“After a long nine months, I’m thrilled to see Tufnell Park reopened on time,” she told Islington Now. “As I wasn’t travelling through Tufnell Park on a regular basis, my local haunts shifted.

“Don’t get me wrong, my husband and I still frequented businesses in Tufnell Park – the restaurants, bars and shops we love – but not nearly as often as it was out of our way.

“I’m excited to get back to normal, and it couldn’t have come at a better time as Archway is about to get much busier with the reworking of the gyratory system.”

TfL had defended their decision to close the station saying the existing lifts were 40 years old and failed on average once a week, causing unplanned travel disruption to customers.
